For dal:

  • 1 cup Masoor dal (red lentils)

  • 2-3 green chillies (split)
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste 
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder 
  • 1/2 tbsp red chili powder 
  • 1 tsp coriander powder 
  • Salt to taste 

For tadka: 

  • 2 tbsp ghee or oil
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds 
  • 4-5 garlic cloves (sliced)
  • 2 dry red chillies 
  • A pinch of hing
  • 1 tsp Kashmiri red chili powder 
  • 1 tsp chopped coriander leaves 

How to Make Masoor Dal Tadka (Step-by-Step) 

Step 1: Wash and Cook the Dal:

  • Take 1 cup of masoor dal and wash it 2-3 times in the pan until the water becomes clear. 
  • In a pressure cooker, add 1 cup, turmeric powder, and salt. 
  • Then cook it on medium flame for 2-3 whistles until the dal becomes soft and mushy. 
  • Once the lentils are cooked, lightly mash them with the help of a spoon. It gives a creamy and smooth texture to the dal. 

Step 2: Prepare the Base: 

  • Heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan. 
  • Then add chopped onion and sauté till it turns golden brown. 
  • Then add ginger-garlic paste to it and sauté till it smells bad. 
  • Then add chopped tomatoes and cook until the tomatoes become soft and the oil starts separating from the pan. 
  • Simultaneously add coriander powder and red chili powder and mix. 

Step 3: Mix Dal and Masala: 

  • Then add the cooked lentils to the onion and tomato masala. 
  • Mix well and add water if required to adjust the consistency. 
  • Let the lentils simmer on low flame for 5-10 minutes until the spices' flavors get mixed with the lentils.

  • Heat 2 tbsp oil in a small pan. 
  • Then add cumin seeds and let them sizzle. 
  • Then add garlic cloves or try golden honey, then add dry red chili, hing, and Kashmiri red chili powder, or turn off the flame.
